As the folklore goes, a fisherman lost his way one dark, and stormy night. His boat sank, and with little hope left, a White Monkey suddenly appeared and gracefully guided the fisherman and his boat safely to land. This land has since then been named Sarushima, or Monkey Island.

As more accurate history goes, Sarushima has been used in a position of defense since the Tokugawa Shogunate era, overrun by tired soldiers, loud canons, guns, and cold barracks lacking provisions. But, the years after Japan’s trauma have been kind to this island, which is the only natural island in Tokyo Bay. Between 1881 and 1945, civilians were not allowed to reach the shores, but, in 2010, the city of Yokosuka in Kanagawa began training tour guides to allow more access to everyone. Visitors today can enjoy Sarushima’s clear waters for fishing and swimming, feel the serenity among the lush vegetation, and even search for romance inside the Tunnel of Love and Ichinen Cave.

It’s a small island, taking about 1 hour to go around with the map. But it’s one beautiful hour that can be spent alone with your partner. During the off-season, you’ll feel as if the island is yours exclusively, with hardly any tourists to photo-bomb your selfies. And there will be plenty of selfie opportunities, as Sarushima’s pathways are Instagram-licious! You can get everything from light hiking on wooden trails through bamboo groves to brick walls covered in moss and vines to sparkling views of the mainland from the cliff to historic and pop-culture references!

It’s no secret that Sarushima has both history and folklore attached to its name. But what is uncommonly known is that our modern generation also recognizes this romantic island. It has been rumored that Sarushima was the inspiration for an early Ghibli film, though Miyazaki himself won’t confirm nor deny any fans’ guesses. The most popular theory is Laputa’s Castle in the Sky. One rumor that can be confirmed, however, is that the long-running TV show and character phenomenon Kamen Rider filmed an action-packed episode here. If you go with a tour guide, you can learn all the details about what stunts were carried out in which parts of the island with which cast members. And, as if this island couldn’t get any more relevant, its virtual map is littered with Pokéstops! As you’re trekking the island together, looking for the perfect Instagram photo or that rare Pokémon, you’ll find yourselves walking along winding paths and echoing tunnels. The longest tunnel, which is dark and damp due to the overgrown, humid vegetation, has been deemed the Tunnel of Love. The only explanation that has been made public is: “When a couple goes through it together…” which leaves it to you both to interpret your own happy ending to the love story. At the other end of the Tunnel of Love, you will come to a small courtyard of sorts, where you will need to choose another tunnel, left or right, to continue on. Each will take you to a different side of the island. On the beach side, you will find the most people and families, pitching tents, grilling BBQs, swimming, and relaxing on the small beach. On the rocky side of Sarushima, you will encounter a more quiet group of people, mostly fishing. Around here, there is a quaint little cave facing the water, which two lovers might find picturesque.

If you’re not keen on lugging your own coolers and umbrellas, you’re in luck! Because there is a pavilion at the pier that rents all sorts of beach day items, as well as seafood, meats, and veggies for barbequing! If you’re just staying for a short part of the day, there is also a restaurant that serves fresh Mediterranean-style meals. On this Monkey Island, rest assured that you won’t have to worry about any monkeys pilfering your food; there aren’t actually any monkeys living on Sarushima. Besides the inevitable bug or two, Sarushima is truly an uninhabited island, perfect for a long or short-day date with your loved one.

When you’re ready to leave Sarushima, feel free to use the low-water faucets for rinsing sand off your hands and feet before getting back on the ferry.

Return boat tickets with the entrance fee of Sarushima Park will be 2,000 JPY.
